Smith And Wesson M&p15 Sport 2 Upgrades

Last Update:

Hey shooters! Welcome to my m&p 15 sport ii upgrades.

I know you love your M&P15 Sport 2 rifle; it’s great quality combined with affordability.

It’s a solid and reliable sporting gun that shooters love. It is better than the M&P 15 because it has the additional forward assist and dust cover.

Today, I will tell you the upgrades you can make to improve your Sport II. I will give you two options for every upgrade so you can choose what you prefer.

I have done a lot of research to figure out what part of the Sport 2 rifle I need to upgrade. I have also had long discussions with folks at my rifle classes to see what other shooters prefer.

All this has resulted in a list which I have mentioned below.

Let’s dive into it.

Smith and Wesson M&P 15 Sport 2 Upgrades

Enlisted below are the upgrades you need to make to your mp15 sport 2 to make it even better.

  1. Handguard
  2. Buttstock
  3. Grip
  4. Trigger
  5. Red Dot Sight
  6. LPVO Optic
  7. Weapon light

Know Your Upgrades

1. Handguard

The handguard is the first upgrade you need to make with your S&W M&P 15 Sport 2.

The plastic handguard of the Smith and Wesson Sport 2 doesn’t have a heat shield, and it gets heated after a few shots and is uncomfortable to shoot with.

You can wear gloves to protect your hands from the heated handguard. But, changing it is the easiest thing to do and a more practical option.

Also, the original handguard of the Sport 2 is small in length, so it’s practical for people with long arms and big hands to have a handguard that goes far. It makes holding the gun for them easier and shooting more comfortable.

There are several options in the market for a Smith and Wesson Sport 2 handguard. I’m going to pick up the best one for you.

Magpul MOE SL – The Most Affordable Option

Read Customer Reviews

The first and foremost reason for choosing this handguard is that it is thinner and much longer than the Sport 2 handguard. So, it gives the additional length that you need to hold your gun comfortably and reduces some bulk.

Secondly, you can attach the MOE SL with the A2 front sight; it sits just beneath the front sight.

It comes in 2 pieces, and the bottom part has a metal shield that protects the handguard from overheating.

Another great thing about this handguard is it is very easy to install. You can install it without using a tool. So, its easy, no-hassle, tool-less installation makes it worth a chance.

Its polymer construction makes it lightweight – so you are not adding too much weight to your gun.

Also, it has M-Lok slots that allow you to attach a Picatinny rail section (if you want to) or sling mounts for attaching a sling.

You get this hand guard in less than 40 dollars. It is the cheapest option on my list.

STNGR HWK M – Lok Free Float Handguard-15 Inches

The next option I have for you is the STNGR HWL handguard (15-inches model).

This handguard is 15 inches long; it covers the rifle’s barrel and gives you the additional length to hold your rifle easily.

No matter how long your arms are, this one has got you covered. So, naturally, you have to remove the A2 front sight post.

This handguard is the one that the police and SWAT use – I think this is enough to know that this is a good quality handguard.

Moreover, it is a well-crafted guard with no cuts and hard edges.

This option is more expensive than the Magpul MOE SL, but for a 15-inches handguard and the good quality it offers, it is reasonably priced.

It is backed with a lifetime warranty by the manufacturer. They will replace the handguard if there is an issue with it.

Most importantly, the Magpul MOA is easy to install. Also, it has a combination of an anti-slide plate and anti-rotation tabs that allows it to attach safely and securely.

The cuts all over the handguard’s body give ventilation that prevents overheating and makes the handguard lightweight.

It comes with front and rear QD points on both sides for attaching a sling.

Note: You can also add the Magpul rail insert with the MOE handguard. This insert makes it even more comfortable to hold; your hand doesn’t bite into the rail when you change positions with your weapon.

Midwest Industries M-Series M-LOK Handguard

Read Customer Reviews

The MI handguard is durable; it is made of 6061 Aluminum – a quality Aluminum. It also has an anodized coating that adds to its durability.

One user mentioned:

“The fit and finish are outstanding, extremely lightweight & strong. I am truly sorry that I waited so long to make my purchase.”

With the good quality, it also has M-LOK that allows you to attach accessories to your gun.

And lastly, it is easy to install. So, there is no hassle in installing this handguard.

2. Stock

The next upgrade you need to make with your M&P Sport 2 is the stock. The stock that this rifle comes with is loose and keeps rattling. It also digs into the shoulder, which makes shooting uncomfortable.

I have 2 options for you to replace your buttstock.

Magpul MOE Adjustable Stock

Read Customer Reviews

The first option I have for you for upgrading the stock is the MOE Adjustable Stock from Magpul. The MOE stock has a rubber pad that prevents slipping and protection from impact. And handling impact makes the gun much more durable.

There is no rattling with the MOE stock like with the original. It has been made possible due to the internal anti-rattle feature.

The Magpul stock is smaller than the original one, and it has a round ending that makes it more comfortable to use. It will no more dig into the shoulder.

The installation is effortless; it won’t take more than a few minutes.

Moreover, it allows sling attachment to your gun in many different ways.

Magpul ACS-L

Read Customer Reviews

The next option in the stock category is the Magpul ACS-L.

The best thing about this stock is its lockup feature which gives a very tight fit. The lock feature fits the stock perfectly to the buffer tube. Due to this tight fit, the ACS-L has no wiggle.

The ending of this stock is rounded and makes shooting much more comfortable.

Also, it is very easy to attach; it doesn’t take more than a minute.

It also includes the center storage compartment to store items if you like. For example, if you want to take extra batteries for your scope.

The ACS-L has a sloping cheek weld that gives a wide contact surface to shoot comfortably.

Moreover, there are two styles of sling attachment – a push-button style in the middle of the stock and a web style sling attachment on the bottom. So, you can attach the sling in two different styles.

3. Grip

The next part of the m&p sport 2 upgrades is the grip. The Sport 2 comes with an A2 grip, and what I find problematic is the protrusion that the A2 grip has.

While shooting with the A2 grip, my middle finger hits that bump every time, and I have to lower my hand, which affects my hold on the grip.

Magpul MOE K2

Read Customer Reviews

Compared to the A2 grip, the MOE K2 sits at a more vertical angle. This vertical grip puts less stress on the wrist and feels more natural.

This grip’s TSP texture and front and back horizontal lines are refined and grippy. So, it gives good control.

It also has a storage compartment at the bottom. You put oil for cleaning, extra battery, or whatever you want to carry on the range.

The beaver tail backstrap allows to hold the gun from a higher point and gives a more solid grip. This tail cap is absent in the A2 grip.

Lastly, if you want all these features and a rubberized finish, get a MOE K2+

Hogue Grip

Read Customer Reviews

The Hogue grip is another option you have for your Sport II upgrade.

This grip has a non-slippery texture, allowing a very tight grip.

It also has a beaver tail that allows holding the grip from a higher point and gives a solid hold.

One thing that makes this grip very ergonomic is the finger grooves – absent in the original Sport 2.

These grooves make the hold perfect and make shooting much more comfortable. The original Sport 2 grip doesn’t have the finger grooves.

The Hogue grip is impervious to solvents. If you throw some water or oil on it, you will still not lose your grip.

4. Trigger

The next part of the m&p 15 sport 2 mods is the trigger. The M&P 15 Sport 2 uses a Mil-spec trigger. This trigger works well, but it’s not very impressive. So, I would give two options for making your M&P 15 Sport 2 trigger much better.

 CMC Drop-in Trigger

Read Customer Reviews

As the name suggests, this one is a drop-in trigger, and a drop-in trigger is easier to install than a multiple-part trigger. So, you get super-easy installation which is a great pro.

Not just that, this trigger also has a light, short and crisp trigger pull that allows for easy target hits. Furthermore, it has a good trigger reset that gives quick follow-up shots.

Also, the CNC trigger is a very affordable aftermarket option.

Timney Competition Trigger

First off, this one is also a drop-in trigger. So there is no hassle in its installation.

The trigger break is very clean with a negligible amount of overtravel. It also has a quick and audible trigger reset. These features combined make for some great shooting.

This model is made specifically for competition, so it’s ideal to use with a modern sporting rifle like the Sport 2.

5. Red Dot Sight

My next upgrade for the m&p15 Sport 2 is a red dot. An optic is an essential addition to your gun. And it’s even better if it’s a red dot as it gives faster target acquisition.

Bushnell Trophy TRS-25 Red Dot Sight Riflescope

The first option I have for you in this category is the Bushnell Trophy TRS-25.

The best part about this red dot is that it comes at a reasonable price. Nobody would want to put a 1000-dollar optic on a gun like Sport 2. So, this $70 is the best choice.

But, it’s not just affordable, it is also good quality. Once you zero it, the zero will stay intact even after 1000 rounds—this is what the review says.

“Once zeroed, this dot never moves. Even after 10000 rounds, this dot has stayed zero and not needed adjustment.”

Also, the dot on this sight is very bright – bright enough for a sunny day.

And, you get 11 brightness settings to adjust your brightness according to your preferences. So, it pretty much covers all your requirements.

Moreover, with the amazing battery life of this red dot, you can keep it running for 125 days straight.

The Holosun 510C is another great red dot you can use with your M&P 15 Sport 2.

Holosun products are revolutionary. They come with a reasonable price, good quality, and innovative features. Holosun keeps the user in mind every time it makes a red dot.

The best feature of the 510c is the Multiple Reticle System. It comes with a 2 Moa dot, a 65 Moa circle, and a circle-dot combination.

You can switch to the 2 moa dot if you need more accuracy for hitting your target. And, change to the 65 Moa circle if you want faster target acquisition. You can also get both if you switch to the circle-dot combination.

The 510c has an insane battery life of 50,000 hours. It also has the famous Shake Awake feature of the Holosun. The shake awake automatically turns the red dot off when there is no movement, preventing battery wastage.

Furthermore, it has the Solar Fail-Safe, a backup power source if your battery dies. You can also use it to save your battery. All you need for it is sunlight.

Lastly, the 510c has a side battery compartment that allows you to change batteries on this optic without completely removing it from the gun. In this way, you don’t have to re-zero your sight.

6. LPVO Optic

Yes, the red dot is a good option, but what’s also good is an LPVO scope attached to your M&P15 Sport 2.

My choice for an LPVO scope for the M&P 15 Sport 2 is the Vortex Viper PST Gen 2.

This scope has 1-6 magnification settings which allow you to shoot from lower to middle range accurately.

What’s special about this scope is that it has super clear glass even at high magnification settings.

Furthermore, it has a 3.8-inch eye relief which makes shooting very comfortable.

7. Weapon Light

A weapon light is an essential addition to your gun. If you have an invader at night, you don’t have the time to find a flashlight before defending yourself. We have many great options for a light, but I have chosen two of the best fits for an S&W M&P15 Sport 2.

Streamlight TLR-1 HL (1000 Lumens)

Streamlight TLR-1 HL

The first light option I have for you is the Streamlight TLR-1 HL.

This light has a combination of 1000 lumens and 20,000 candelas that give incredibly bright light.

It doesn’t just have a bright light but also a very balanced beam pattern which gives good situational awareness.

Also, it has quick attachment/detachment due to its rail grip clamp.

And, it has ambidextrous switches which allow both left and right-handed people to use it.

This throw monster is also very affordable. So, you don’t need to break your bank to buy a quality optic.

Inforce WML Gen 2

The next option in this category is the Inforce WLM Gen 2.

This light has 400 lumens of bright light. It also has an angled activation button that gives an easy operation.

Moreover, it includes a lockout system to prevent accidental activation.

The WML comes with an included mount, so you don’t have to buy an extra piece.

It is also built with heat-dissipating vents to prevent the light from overheating.

Furthermore, it includes 3 modes: constant, momentary, and strobe. And the transition from one mode to the other is effortless.

Lastly, this light also comes at a very affordable price.

Parting Thoughts

So, this is my list of the S&W m&p 15 sport 2 upgrades. I have included upgrades for a handguard, stock, grip, trigger, a red dot sight, a scope, and a weapon light. Choose your preferred upgrades from the given options.
